I don't get why people are scaring people away from mastodon because "admins can read DMs" - and? That's true of 99% of services on the internet.
If your content isn't encrypted, then the people that store it can obviously access it.
since every instance is smaller, it’s a different threat. With Twitter it would be β€œmods read my dms and now I’m at the mercy of the Saudi administration”. Here it’s much more local.
obvious to you and me, sure, but most people have very little understanding of how computers work
mastodon is honest about it the rest isn’t
I don't think scaring people is the point, it's probably more of a reminder

I think there's this (mis?-)conception that foss alternatives are inherently more private by default and it's not immediately obvious for a lot of people that, yes, DMs aren't encrypted. At least I know it wasn't for me back when I joined fedi.
True! But to be honest, thats something that needs to be changed. The whole "DMs are just non-public posts" is just bad.
People are so used to giant companies having vast power over their lives, but are so paranoid about their fellow human beings that an admin (= human) is seen as a threat, while a company (= the system) is seen as normal
fantastic point!

By that logic everyone should be scared out of employment by now... πŸ˜ΉπŸ‘ŒπŸ€‘
