I love it that Stewart Cheifet immediately asks that, and if it doesn't make any noises.

Hey everyone,

I’m micr0, the person behind Altbot, the open-source bot that helps generate alt-text for images, videos, and audio on the Fediverse. Right now, Altbot uses Google Gemini to generate the alt-text, but that means your data goes through Google’s servers and could be used for training their machine learning models.

To fix this and ensure total privacy, I’m looking to move Altbot to a local model that will run completely on my own hardware. This way, your data won’t be saved, shared, or used anywhere else—it’ll stay private and only temporarily be on my hardware.

It’s a big goal, but one that’s been on my mind since the very beginning. I’ve been talking about this shift for a while, and it’s time to make it happen. Plus, if I reach the goal, Altbot will be running on 48% renewable energy, which means less environmental impact and more sustainability.

To make this happen, I need to raise $1,800–$2,000 USD to buy server-grade hardware—things like GPUs for model processing, a solid motherboard, power supply, storage, and cooling. With this setup, I’ll be able to run Altbot privately, efficiently, and sustainably.

I’ve also posted a breakdown of the planned server specs and spending as a reply to this post if you’re curious about the details!

If this sounds like something you want to support, any help would be appreciated! Every little bit gets me closer to the goal. You can donate here: Ko-fi Link.

Thanks so much for supporting Altbot and helping make the Fediverse a better place!

You've probably heard that "we are stardust," but this graphic breaks it down further & tells you what kind of stars your dust came from--and which elements didn't come from stars at all.

https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/13873/ #science #nature #space
This periodic table depicts the primary source on Earth for each element: from the Big Bang, massive stars, white-dwarf supernovae, merging neutron stars, low-mass stars, or other processes. In cases where two sources contribute fairly equally, both appear.

Of you write Aluminum, you also have to write Uranum, Plutonum and Americum, or the rest of the world will rightfully ridicule you. At least be consistent.
@Codeschubse @Corey S Powell I say aluminium because that's what I grew up saying, but: platinum, molybdenum, lanthanum. There are two conventions and picking one is arbitrary, even if one is dominant.

The British coiner of the word picked -um and the British, US and global chemical communities switched it to -ium, only to be thwarted by *shakes fist* Weeebsteeer.

Yes, I have a giant harddisk!
A Windows 3.x message window titled "Requester", with the text "Are you sure you want to copy the game to your HD? (You will need about 200 MB of free disk space!)" and two buttons: "Yes, I have a giant harddisk!" and "No, it was just a joke!".

That looks very much like an AmigaOS / Intuition EasyRequester(), though obviously running on Windows. Which game is that?

!Star Trek🖖🏽|Gruppe Hello group. I want to watch something new, which one is it more like Star Trek? Battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5?

Star Trek🖖🏽|Gruppe reshared this.

they are all very different. The starfleet ideas are unique.

bsg has a fight for survival with little techno babble. The tech is closer to what we can do already.

b5 is also about different species and their politics, but with the humans more like the todays jerks we are.

so i would suggest to watch both. Starting with bsg to not compare b5 with startrek so much.

Thanks for the suggestions!

The willful obtuseness needed to hear "sex is a social construct" and think people mean "I don't believe chromosomes exist" and not "our attempts to define a 'sex' that can function as way to organize humanity into two distinct halves with differing social roles is, obviously, a cultural artifact and a problematic one at that"

Laws are never equally enforced or applied especially when you have tons of investors money. It is a sad reality. https://bsky.app/profile/lonestartallboi.bsky.social/post/3kiib4qnjt324
Komm, süsser Tod Howard • @lonestartallboi.bsky.social writers: 20 years ago we were suing teenagers for millions of dollars because they were torrenting a single Metallica album and now billionaires are demanding the free right to every work in history, so that they can re-sell it. The law only ever serves capital. This is quoted in response to the guardian post: 'Impossible' to create Al tools like ChatGPT without copyrighted material, OpenAl says

This is your annual reminder that many autistic people consider groups seeking to prevent or cure autism to be eugenicist hate groups and would strongly prefer that any donations you make go to groups that seek to improve the lives of autistic people instead

If you're not from the US and want to travel here. Don't.

I thought as a (German and white) visitor I'm gonna be fine.

Border and customs protection took my phone, forced me to unlock it and stole god knows what data from it. The agent was powertripping and made sure to let me know that I am powerless and he can just send me home or do godknowswhat to me.

He directly said "if you're annoying I'm just sending you home".

Apparently my trans ass was part of a "random search". Lol.

I'm fine now and with Lexi luckily. I don't know what kind of malware is on my phone, or what they took from it. I've been crying all throughout my connecting flight.

This place is a dystopian shithole. Please don't go here.

I couldn’t remember a piece of #PostgreSQL array syntax so I searched Google.

The first result is some AI spam page. The result provided on it is incorrect; it’s the MySQL answer, though also not quite correct.

The Internet is going to be killed and it will be AI spam that kills it.

#AI #LLMs #spam
Google search will be killed, but the internet will survive, and the web and Google will probably both survive as well

but like, this isn't

"mental gymnastics"

it's literally "how it happens"

This applies to all current publicly available AI generators, not just those producing images.
Newspaper clipping that reads:

"There is no ethical way to use the major Al image generators. All of them arc trained on stolen images, and all of them are built for the purpose of deskilling, disempowering and replacing real, human artists."

Welp, time to check my old CDs and cassettes. (I actually have a couple of old CDs that lasted longer than what these said. Let's see if the cassettes are also long-lasting contrary to what they say...)

🤔 How long does it take to use the sonic shower?
Indeed. Using the point-to-point transporter to beam the first officer into space is an easy way to have some unscheduled fun.
