I genuinely do not understand why people feel the need to apply this kind of social pressure to Anglicise. The guy who runs the corner shop nearest me wears a name tag that says "Paul".

He is a lovely man called Mandip who is very kind and can never do enough to help if you're nice to him.

Again, his name is Mandip. Man-dip. It's not even difficult to pronounce.

Boggles the mind.

- 7.2% of American adults are LGBTQ. That's 18.9 million adults, or larger than the entire veteran population.
- 11 million Americans are bisexual. That's more people than the entire state of Georgia.
- 3.6 million Americans are gay. That's more than the entire state of Utah.
- 2.6 million Americans are lesbian. That's more people than every single farmer in the country.
- and 1.6 million of us are transgender. That's TWICE as many as there are cops in the entire United States.

When people say "we shouldn't change our entire society just to pander to such a small percentage of it", that's obviously a really dumb argument from just an ethical stance. But it's also a really dishonest one. Because they would never say the same thing about veterans, farmers, cops, or the populations of entire States.

Regular reminder: if your site or app doesn’t work in Firefox, it’s broken.

I lived through the “this site requires and/or is best in IE” era, and I’d rather burn it all down than return to that.

Pro-tip: Firefox does most things better anyway. Give it a spin and enjoy a less-tracked web.
or: Firefox is soft tech fascism, blocking shit by authoritarian default that i want to open. I wish Brave was better or some light non surveillance capitalist alternative. Any recos?
@thomkennon ...What does it block that you want to open? Only thing I ever have that with is stuff that's not properly encrypted. :/
@Angle Yeah I prolly should take the time to customize it. A bunch of sites I use frequently (lots of older academic sites) it just breaks and hangs. It's a nanny app and I guess I'm too old and anarchic.
@thomkennon lol... maybe it's the sites that need fixing, ever thought about that.... ? you have old, broke, probably badly developed and unmaintained sites, but you choose to blame the gold standard for modern browsers instead.

yet you claim to be an academic. I hope this is not the way in which you normally reason and work...
@thomkennon whoa. this tbh has got to be one of the worst takes about anything I have heard in quite a while. that is quite amazing.

I think you really need to step away from the keyboard and spare innocent bystanders of your harmful nonsense...

My job failed to change my name for almost a full year because HR said it was IT's responsibility and IT said it was HR's responsibility.

(It was actually IT's fault: HR had already changed my name, but a computer bug stopped it from propagating to the entire system.)

I didn't have Photos open or nothing Windows 10 just felt it was very important I know what it's been up to lately
On an unrelated note, I just opened the Windows 10 Photos app for the first time ever directly instead of opening a file, only to discover it has been tracking every single image I have ever opened in Photos back to 2017 when I got this computer and will show the entire list to anyone who opens Photos.exe on my computer. This is a mind-boggling feature to have without notifying the user you're doing it. I feel like you could only design this feature if you have no pornography on your computer.
This reminds me of the eerie tracking it does in the background for recently opened windows/apps that surfaces when you go to open a new desktop view (via Windows key+Tab).

You get this timeline view of some (thankfully not all) recently open windows/apps and I don't recall anything ever telling me it would be doing that. At least this is a little more out of the way than Photos, but still, similarly gross feeling.

Since it seems #Google has decided to uni-laterally force through their new anti-#adblock #DRM euphemistically named "Web environment integrity", I decided to add a little bit of code to my website that blanks out the page and displays a protest message with a link to the firefox download page when you visit it from a browser with this DRM feature. Here's the source inside one toot, feel free to copy and put it at the end of your website's <body> before the closing tag:

Not shure if that'll work as Google will likely prevent / patch out that settung on Chrome and Chromium...
Chrome and chromium both still allow you to disable EME.

Firefox is actually worse in this regard. If you disable EME you will periodically get popups telling you to enable it even on sites where it's unnecessary.

Reminded of the “Kurt Vonnegut goes to buy an envelope” quote. One of the best expressions of the joys of careful and deliberate inefficiency I’ve read.

Posted as image because the alt text has a higher character limit than a toot so I can paste the whole text as actual text there. Weird huh.
Kurt Vonnegut tells his wife he’s going out to buy an envelope:
“Oh, she says, well, you’re not a poor man. You know, why don’t you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet?
And so I pretend not to hear her. And go out to get an envelope because I’m going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope.
I meet a lot of people. And see some great looking babies. And a fire engine goes by. And I give them the thumbs up. And I’ll ask a woman what kind of dog that is. And, and I don’t know. The moral of the story is — we’re here on Earth to fart around.
And, of course, the computers will do us out of that. And what the computer people don’t realize, or they don’t care, is we’re dancing animals. You know, we love to move around. And it’s like we’re not supposed to dance at all anymore.”

jec& reshared this.

this is absolute gold.

On the alt text vs post character limit, I would guess here that the visual aesthetics of a Very Long Post are not so great to someone who is not impacted with low vision, but if they are, and are using a screenreader, most everything is words, so no difference.

On Mastodon a picture is worth 1500 characters 😀
On Friendica, my side of the fediverse, our character limits are designed for more longer form posts like you'd see on a Facebook type system. I still find it beneficial to use the ALT-text for images cases like this. People who can see the image would find having all the text duplicated overly verbose while people who can't get the image or have trouble seeing the image can leverage the ALT text.
Ya but they can automatically add a read more link which solves the aesthetics issue.

In the spirit of a most humble request, I seek your attention, dear developers of the resplendent platform known as #Mastodon, to engage in a #discourse pertaining to the limitation of characters bestowed upon us. 1/5

Much like the young Oliver Twist, who in his unassuming innocence dared to ask for more, I find myself standing before the mighty creators, the architects of this digital edifice, clutching an empty bowl of limited characters, seeking a kind gesture of magnanimity.

"Please, Mastodon," I beseech in earnest, holding out my Overflowing bowl of 500 characters, "may I have some more?" 2/5

No, that's absurd, of course not.

However, hanging out with people who have chosen to put radical authenticity to their senses of self above societal pressures to fit in, might make you think twice about a thing or two that you currently take for granted.

Human-facing, client-side platform-state attestation tools are not going to be used to secure the agency or well being of humans. As soon as they hit production they are going to be used to defend businesses and business models at the expense of human choice and agency. Intentions are irrelevant, they are worth nothing, and anyone building these tools claiming that they serve a human good is lying to you, themselves or both.

This is increasingly how it feels, when things you "own" digitally become inaccessible, and when shows which are locked in streaming services can get delisted on a whim, disappearing forever.

Thank you @Illuminatus for this quote.

@jec&
@Seph Harrison♊ ✅ Logged in with the admin user, the menu has a "Moderation" option; that takes you to a page where you can insert domain patterns to block. I'm not home right now but I can screencap it later if you like.

For anyone else reading this I should clarify we are discussing the ActivityPub-compatible Friendica social network, which I should've noted on my original post. Other examples of non-Mastodon, ActivityPub-compatible networks you might have heard of include Misskey/Calckey, Kbin, Lemmy, Peertube, Pixelfed, and more.
And now the new infamous Threads, of course. Hence the blocking
@jec& I can find that, was looking under Admin, as well as doing a quick DDG search and not finding it, thanks.

And if'n I did it right, *.threads.net is blocked.
