Look y'all. I'm not saying there aren't things that are problematic (in terms of violence, misogyny, LGBTQ+phobia, capitalism) in hip hop, and other parts of Black culture. I'm not insane.

What I'm saying is, those same elements are in all parts of white culture as well, because America - like all modern political systems - glorifies violence, misogyny, LGBTQ+phobia, and capitalism.

Don't judge Black culture more harshly than you judge white culture for doing the exact same things. That's it.

It's pretty clear to me that the US music industry (read: white, middle-aged music execs), aggressively promoted those artists who were more celebratory of violence, misogyny, homophobia, drug culture, etc.

That sculpted white perceptions of hip hop. Real heads know there was a whole "conscious" underground of creative, socially and politically aware, thoughtful, reflective, upbeat, even spiritual music within the genre that never got quite the same airplay.
@Prof Kemi FG it's bullshit, just an excuse to get away with low-key racism by applying double standards and singling stuff out for criticism

I'd say that it's a narrative that came from the 90s, because in that moment, thanks to the influence of Cobain & Co., rock became very politically correct, and so then hip-hop looked like an outlier - but only a couple years beforehand, all of those things were very very present in rock as well, like Guns N Roses was one of the biggest bands in the world right up until then, and all those same critics didn't see anything weird in it when white people were doing it

And Cobain himself was a fan of NWA
