To my fellow autistics peeps: do you experience visual snow? I wonder how likely it is that it relates to my autistic brain.

Mine is colored and constant. Most noticeable across lighter homogenous backdrops, such as a light colored walls, or the day sky.

btw until just a few years ago I just assumed everybody saw like this (I'm 41)! Only when randomly asking my partner in passing, I realized it wasn't so...

I get this, I didn't know other people didn't! It's not bad, it's usually only there if my eyes unfocus.
I wonder if it's a noise processing issue. I know that autistic folks are more likely to hear background sounds that are usually filtered by neurotypicals.

I usually only get snow the day before a migraine or when I am having a visual migraine. #ActuallyAutistic#Migraine

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

yes i have very aggressive visual snow lmao. I sometimes can't tell if it's raining outside or not bc my visual snow can make it always look like it's raining very lightly. 😅

Learned this year that my (probably autistic) dad also has visual snow, and he didn't know that not everyone has that until i told him LOL. He's 62! Walkin around assuming everyone just has visual snow haha. 😆 I found out not everyone has it when I was in my teens i think

also: synesthesia. My dad does not have synesthesia but i do like hardcore. So that's kind of interesting that we both have visual snow but don't both have synesthesia.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@itsmeholland
Is that where you see the sky glitter when rain is coming?

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@Aurora not exactly? It's just kind of like there's TV static in my vision at all times, kind of faintly but noticeably laid over everything.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@itsmeholland I do get that at night when the room is dark sometimes, but not during the daytime.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I had to squint at the visual snow example gif because the effect was obscured by my visual snow 😅

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

The article mentions Tinnitus. I have that.
@actuallyautistic

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@AutisticMumTo3 same here! Had Tinnitus since age 12.
Am very light sensitive, eyes wise, but no snow for me. 😊

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@AutisticMumTo3 Ow yes! I hate TL lights. Not sure if they're called the same in English 🤔 but they always flicker to my eyes while many don't see that.
I barely need light to see rather well. But I almost always need sunglasses outside during day time... 😊

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@Cynni
I think its probably fluorescent lights you are referring to as they do have a flicker unlike LED lights
@jec @actuallyautistic

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@AutisticMumTo3 yes! Thank you! The translation app made something weird from it (probably because of my way of using it 😂). But those lights indeed can drive me insane!
Led lights are way easier on the eyes. Since screens went led and oled, they became more pleasant to my eyes as well.

Thank you for this! Fluorescent it is. 😊

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@AutisticMumTo3 @Cynni Me too, but I'm probably epileptic as well and always have been photosensitive, between all my disabilities and meds.

Flashing lights give me spasms / convulsions and so on. That's part of why I'm advocating against it and won't put any in my games!

It's so dangerous for many of us!

I wish allistic and abled people would care more!

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@testoceratops @AutisticMumTo3 @Cynni I had to stop watching programs or movies where they'd switch the camera back and forth between faces too quickly. It made me nauseous.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@Tooden @AutisticMumTo3 @Cynni Same here!

It's so inaccessible, they should really do something about it for inclusivity.

Plus those fast changes aren't necessary, they can make it otherwise to create the same effect they want without excluding disabled folks!

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@AutisticMumTo3 I got tinnitus earlier this year, probably age related in my case, wasn’t too bad at first but it’s been getting louder since I’ve had a URTI recently.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@weaniejeanie53
I've had it at least all my adult life and probably longer
@jec @actuallyautistic

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

Yesss, I have it all the time but most noticeably against darker colours. It's multicoloured and constant, worse in the dark. I thought it was maybe linked to my having migraine and light sensitivity - it'd be interesting if it's common amongst autistic people!

2 people reshared this

@sonflower
This is me. Only in the dark.
My eyes are crazy light sensitive - like at night with my eyes closed, I can tell you when the light changes at an intersection because I can see the colour change through my eyelids.

2 people reshared this

@deirdrebeth I feel this! I recently bought a really thick sleeping mask because any slight shift in lighting will wake me up. I have blackout curtains, but they're just not enough.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

yeah we do too

-- clem shark 🧡
Yes, I do. I can especially see it when the room is dimly lit. I called them "balloons" when I was little (anything that was circle shaped was a balloon to me then).

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I might have this, but I usually only notice it in low light or when I'm looking for it. It's like flickering noise in a video taken in the dark.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

Yep, also tinnitus.
It's only noticeable against dark backgrounds, but I think it's there all the time

2 people reshared this

@straylight Synesthesia too? We really are an interesting bunch!
@Skye

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

Wow! I expected some people might also have this but not this many! Actually surprised.

btw on several people mentioning it: paying attention I actually realized is it indeed more noticeable against dark backdrops. I guess it's just that when I wrote the post I was with the lights on and looked around...
Yup I have jpeg vision. afterimages and floaters too

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@UnderwaterSomething Same here! And my vision is often blurry as well, I can see two or three times the person or thing in front of me.

It's often giving me headaches to focus btw!

I often see some black spots which are often difficult to manage!

2 people reshared this

@testoceratops I have glasses but often don't have them on so my vision is often blurry 😆

I remember having quite big black spots in my vision but I don't seem to now. I guess my environment changed? 🤷‍♂️ I have mostly transparent spaghetti looking floaters

Afterimages can be like that. I often start blinking when they are, trying to get it different

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@UnderwaterSomething Gotta get new glasses anyway, I hope it'll help cause the last ones didn't!

Those big black spots are still there even when I wear my actual glasses, so that sucks 😔

I'm glad you feel a bit better about it!

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@testoceratops @UnderwaterSomething I have black spots, funny enough my eyes can lose focus too, for seconds causing blurriness.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@SamYoung841 @UnderwaterSomething It really is! I didn't know it was that common!

2 people reshared this

@testoceratops @UnderwaterSomething neither did I, I didn’t even know it was associated with autism, I found out today… this entire thread taught me something today.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

only mildly, usually only Notice it on any sort of plain background (most noticeable on walls in the dark (which is where we first noticed it), and blue sky.) It doesn't get in the way of my vision at all.
I don’t have it but it is one of my son’s long covid symptoms

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@loiscameron
Interesting that it is seen in longcovid too.
I'm also dealing with longcovid and haven't picked up on changes because of it ( changes I mentioned somewhere else in thread were before LC)
Though most of my LC symptoms are stuff I already had a little of getting worse.

Do you know if it's somewhat common as LC symptom?

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@UnderwaterSomething in the range of diverse long covid symptoms ,it seems quite rare , he has come across one other person , he did have tinnitus before so maybe it crossed modalities. Who knows it’s a weird condition that is tough for you all. Hope health & strength returns to you soon , he now describes his long covid as being in the background of his life rather than the 2 years which it spent at the foreground.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@loiscameron Ah thanks! I hadn't come across it yet as a symptom and thought I was reasonably up to date. Thought maybe it was something more of people who ended up with LC more recently.

For me I had this vision all my life so mostly used to it🤷‍♂️ but think it would be very strange to just get that one day.

Things have been very slowly getting better (fatigue mostly) Glad it seems to be for your son also!

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@UnderwaterSomething he found very wearisome - haven’t asked him recently if it I still there & he hasn’t mentioned it - maybe if it is he has accommodated or maybe it’s gone ???

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I have visual snow and I've had it in my earliest memories. Don't know if related to autism.
yep, i've had visual snow and floaters all my life! i used to complain about it when i was very young (3-4?) and my parents couldn't understand what i was talking about at all. i've also wondered if it's something everyone "has", as in, we all receive the same visual noise with our eyes, but most people filter it out of their conscious awareness.
Yes, definitely, I've experienced it for as long as I can remember. It's nice to have a name to put to it and a way to describe it that makes sense to other people. On not knowing that everyone experiences it, how would one know? This is the first time I've ever heard/seen anyone mention it.

It was the same with the constant sounds in my ears. It's been there for as long as I can remember. When I came across information on #tinnitus, it was nice to have a name to put to it. And, nice to know that not everyone experiences it.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@JustTooOdd I didn’t realize it was a thing until yesterday when I went in for some auditory testing. My tech also has ADHD and is like, “oh you’ve got the tinnitus too?” It’s rare my surroundings and brain are quiet enough for me to hear it but it’s definitely there.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I only see this when looking up at a clear blue sky.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I occasionally see what looks an awful lot like the kinds of things you can see through a microscope. Not normally, but like, if I look at a blurry light at an appropriate distance. :/

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I think those are called "floaters". Used to see them a lot as a child, but not now.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I can see slight snow that becomes more visible and multicolored when I close my eyes and I have eye floaters. I can also slightly hear auditory static that I thought everyone was also hearing. I haven't been diagnosed with synesthesia and I've never had a migraine before.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@AJosslyn how is this my exact story lol

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I didn’t know that this is unusual. I thought everyone had this 🤯

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@Trine_DK I had no idea this was a thing, it sounds extremely obnoxious if you're not born that way and are habituated to it.

I guess if i close my eyes, they still "physically see" colored shapes and shit, but that's as close as I can think of there being visual snow for me and I doubt that's the same thing.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@Trine_DK I thought mine was aging/diabetes. But maybe this is something else. It's worse outdoors in sunlight.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I don't experience this, but in case it's relevant, I have aphantasia.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@SleepyCatten I also have #aphantasia and don’t experience this. I wonder if there is a link?

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@cyvern fortunately I only have this at night...

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

Yeap, seems so... I only found out a couple of years ago! Like at 38 or something... lol

3 people reshared this

apparently I do have visual snow. didn't think mine counted because I only notice it when it's darkish, and it doesn't get in the way of anything. interesting. I always just thought it's similar to the effects cameras have when taking photos in low light.
I don't think I'm autistic (maybe? I haven't explored it) but I do experience this!

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I get black spots and they remind me of fruit flies. Is that the same thing? I have never associated with my autism, I just thought it was a problem with my eyes 🤦🏽‍♀️

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@SamYoung841
I used to get black spots but can't remember getting them for quite a few years now. I'm also much more indoors then what I used to be so not sure if it's that.

There's someone else in this thread that also has them

So maybe it's connected 🤷‍♂️

2 people reshared this

@UnderwaterSomething I will check out the tread. Thank you 🙏🏾

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

Fascinating, never heard about it before (don't have it). Isn't this super annoying, like a visual tinnitus? Or doesn't it matter because you don't know it any other way?
I imagine it must be different for everybody. In my case it doesn't cause distress at all really, thankfully. Even tho the static effect is there constantly and multicolored (think the whole rainbow of colors) my visual clarity is not affected. It's like a translucent filter if you will, that lets me see through it, it doesn't cover stuff. Also I see like this ever since I can remember so this is simply how I see things, like you say I don't know it any other way.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

V/interesting question! I thought of Scheerer's phenomenon immediately, which I have only observed twice or so in my life, whereas floaters have been a constant since childhood. Tinnitus is a near-constant.Something for neurology to tease out!

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

Could you share the name of the documentary? I've been interested in this phenomenon for years but unfortunately the online material on it is scarce...

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

@itsmeholland is that what that is? I have the same problem looking out the window for rain.

I don't notice it much otherwise with my eyes open. Doesn't everyone get it with eyes closed?
