Be patient with your online autistic pals right now. These massive changes in social media landscapes & drastic, sudden overhauls in atmosphere on platforms that have been a lifeline for us are really hard to adjust to. For many of us, it’s how we connect. The sudden inaccessibility & overwhelming hostility is also really triggering of past social trauma. Be gentle with us while we find our feet with it all.

In 1938, kindergarten teacher Helen Hulick wore slacks to court to testify as a witness in Los Angeles, CA. Judge Arthur Guerin was appalled & rescheduled the case, instructing her to “return in a dress.”

The next day, Hulick showed up in slacks again, declaring, “I will stand on my rights…I like slacks. They’re comfortable.”

She was sent to jail. https://web.archive.org/web/20210315143406/https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2019-11-15/from-the-archives-wear-slacks-to-court-and-go-to-jail #HistoryRemix

My favourite time of the day is “chatting” with my non-speaking autistic son as we wait for his school to open in the morning. I say chatting in inverted commas as he uses a letterboard to communicate with (as well as typing and #proloquo2go) This morning he explained that sadly his lovely friend has lots of meltdowns. I asked him why he doesn’t have many meltdowns. He told me “Because I can communicate well”

Pine martens - aren’t they just beautiful?
A departure from my mountain photography today. I have spent the last six summers photographing pine martens from my tiny hide in the woods near #Inverness in the #ScottishHighlands.
This animal on the right is only 5 months old, leaning up against her mum and having a look around. A magical moment, and one I am privileged to have seen.

To my fellow autistics peeps: do you experience visual snow? I wonder how likely it is that it relates to my autistic brain.

Mine is colored and constant. Most noticeable across lighter homogenous backdrops, such as a light colored walls, or the day sky.

btw until just a few years ago I just assumed everybody saw like this (I'm 41)! Only when randomly asking my partner in passing, I realized it wasn't so...

Do…
round numbers up to the nearest whole number.
Do leave space around numbers.
Do fill in the information you already have.
Do use sentences to add context about numbers.
Do let people include spaces when entering numbers.
Do user research with people who struggle with numbers.

Do not…
 use decimals unless it's money.

Do not overwhelm people with too much content.

Do not expect users to repeat or remember numbers.

Do not use tables or grids without explaining what the numbers mean.

Do not rush users to enter numbers accurately.

Do not force people to enter a number or do a sum to verify themselves.

"Reduce. Reuse. Recycle." is in order of most impact, but society discourages the first 2 and pushes the last bc it's the only one that is compatible with #consumerism and Capitalism.

A shame, since reduction and reuse are drastically more effective and don't perpetuate a system known to cause harm to the world. Really makes a person wonder why 'recycle' is on that list in the first place.

#anticapitalism

Not only that but I very rarely see products made from (or even packaged with!) recycled material. They simply are listed as "recyclable".

¿Qué es el autismo?

https://www.comunidadesinclusivas.org/que-es-el-autismo1.html

A non-pathological definition of autism written by Dr. Nick Walker (full text linked below):

"Autism is a genetically-based human neurological variant. The complex set of interrelated characteristics that distinguish autistic neurology from non-autistic neurology is not yet fully understood, but current evidence indicates that the central distinction is that autistic brains are characterized by particularly high levels of synaptic connectivity and responsiveness. ..."

Thank you for sharing, this whole text is very beautifully articulated and accurate. I think I’ll show it to my son who’s 11 and such a brilliant mind that not all adults always understand and appreciate him.
this was wonderful to read, thank you!

I immediately identified strongly as a kid with the "Flowers for Algernon" story not just because it's tragic and a mind seeing itself decay is super scary, but because I've experienced those two extremes of "wow so you think you're so smart huh?" and "you're really incredibly stupid" without any in between of just having typical human experiences... nearly every week of my life. His extra brain capacity is sort of a curse!

Now that you're on Mastodon, please enjoy this brief rant about why you absolutely MUST share the stuff you love (even if it's smutty - as long as it's CN'd appropriately). On Here, discovery is mostly reliant on hashtags and SHARING - otherwise posts can't cross instances. So if you're just liking a post and not sharing it, you're saying 'I enjoyed this, but I don't want anyone else to.' Share stuff! I rely on it to find ppl, and so do you!

The lesson to take from the big layoffs at Twitter and Facebook is this: "The job will never love you back." No matter how much effort you put in, no matter how clever you are, no matter how long you've committed yourself to $COMPANY, when push comes to shove, you're just a replaceable part in the machine.

Keep your weekends and your evenings. Leave your bugs at work. Your time is for you, and your boss won't send you flowers.

jec& reshared this.

This is true. From 1974 on, I mostly worked at companies I had founded or co-founded, so that's different. But for every other job I've had, yes, this is true. And it should be obvious. The first concern of any business is its own survival and it must take every step necessary for its own survival. If the leadership of a business decides that the business would be better without you, it MUST let you go. Anything else would be irresponsible.

There are exceptions, of course, but these are rare. You might find yourself working for a smaller family-run business and work there so long you become a member of the family. The family may look out for you like one of their own. That's different and rare. The larger the business, the less it cares about you. It might feel like family, but this is an illusion. It's not.

I see people asking about self-dx. I went in for a professional dx over a decade ago. I had a paper equivalent of a PowerPoint presentation to prove myself to the most ableist psych ever.

After going round and round with him, I finally got a dx of autism. It was in my file. Then he remembered I have kids who are also autistic.

He asked if I love them. I said yes. He asked if they love me. Again, yes. His response was "autistic people are not capable of loving people. That falls under the relationship defecit."

We went round and round again. He knew I 100% feel that I love my kids and they love me. I wasn’t backing down from that one.

I was given a choice. I could admit that I don't love my kids, and I could keep my autism dx. Or I could stand my ground and insist I love them, but he would change my dx to anxiety and depression.

He knew that if I said I didn't love my kids, I would be lying just to get the dx that I felt was correct. He didn't care if I was being honest, just that I would say what he wanted to hear.

I told him that I love my kids, he could do whatever he wanted with his notes, but he had already given me the autism dx and I was keeping it.

He officially changed my dx like he threatened. He then told me that if I ever brought my already dx'd kids to him, he would take their dx away too.

So do I feel like a professional dx holds any more weight than self dx? Absolutely not. If professional diagnoses are handed out based on power trips and intimidation instead of facts, then I don't understand why they are more valid than someone speaking truthfully about their experiences.

With the holidays coming up, I thought I'd bring up... I've been on the Internet for 25 years and I still find, to this day, every once in a while, people from the northern hemisphere that don't know our seasons are different.

To us, it's a readily available fact, since before even going to school, from all those wintery, snowy christmas movies. But, to us, the holidays mean... icecream, fruit salads, ice bags, canvas pools, fans and ACs, dinner outside...

This is just a tiny, seemingly trivial token of what a usa-dominated global discourse does - but worthy of mention precisely because of it. It permeates and erases everything. It flattens the human experiency to mind numbing, bland homogeneity. However, we still exist.

You might have seen somebody using the proverb Vox Populi, Vox Dei. What was missing was the context in which it was used:
Nec audiendi qui solent dicere, Vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit.

In case you do not speak Latin, it means in English:

And those people should not be listened to who keep saying the voice of the people is the voice of God since the riotousness of the crowd is always very close to madness.
