I felt like making a bird rainbow, so I made a bird rainbow. These are all birds that hang out at my place from time to time.

Depending on app, you may need to click to see them all.

#BirdsOfMastodon #Tasmania #Robins #Whistler #Rosella #Parrot #FairyWren #Colourful #Rainbow
Six bird photos arranged in two rows.

The top row is three robins:
1. Pink robin: Bright pink chest and underside. Grey head and chest with a small amount of white above beak and on wing.
2. Scarlet robin: Bright red chest, black head and chest with white above beak and on wing and underside.
3. Flame robin: Bright orange chest with darker flame-like feathers lower down. Grey head and chest with white above beak and on wing and underside.

The second row is:
4. Superb fairy-wren: Sky-blue top of head, cheek and band around neck and very other head feathers, neck, back and tail. Wings are brown and underside is moddled white and grey with some blue.
5. Green rosella: Small parrot. Most feathers are olive green but the chin and some wing feathers are bright blue and there's a red patch above the beak.
6. Golden whistler: Small bird with bright yellow body. The head is black with a large white chin patch. The wings are olive, underside is white and tail is grey.

I miss when Star Trek was boring and for the extremely nerd, instead of mainstream generic space opera of doomsday threats and cartoonish villains. But it's not about gatekeeping or whatever you might think - it's because it was different. Unlike Narissa from Picard S01, I am not a onedimensional character. I can be many things, and being extremely nerd is just one of them. I am also mainstream audience, and I do greatly enjoy mainstream melodramatic space opera, like the Mandalorian for example. But my nerd self has nowhere to go now.

Also, the future of classic Star Trek was somewhere that made you want to live there and daydream of what could be possible. The NuTrek dystopia where everything is blowing up all the time, is not that. Can we please have different things
I gave up on modern Treck after season 1 Discovery, not as bad as Enterprise, but I just knew they could never get back to this level. TV is just not written like this any more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i41aEtE0iYs

I've been a professional musician since the end days of selling CDs, and I would like to say that having experienced the decline of CD sales because of piracy transition into the paid streaming era it's unambiguous that musicians were better off when mostly everyone was pirating and then some people bought CDs or other merch out of a desire to support vs today when everyone pays a nominal fee to a corporation that pays us nothing and also satisfies their desire to support despite not actually offering support.

I would much rather you pirate anything I have made or worked on vs listening on streaming services, which are an objective nightmare for musicians. Even if you never intend to spend a penny, normalizing piracy is better for us than normalizing the current capitalist-realism nightmare where you get whatever you want and also get to relax into the fiction that you aren't exploiting musicians because you pay the price of one album per month to a giant corporation so you can feel ok about it.

Content is corporate.

Don't be corporate.

The only way left to combat the algorithms is being aggressively human.
Post from Tumblr from user androdragynous:

art tips

- don't call what you create "content". regardless of what it is. that's the devil talking. call it art, call it writing, call it music, call it analysis, call it editing, literally just call it what it is
 - I was going to put other things but oh my god please just don't call yourself a "content creator". you are a person you are making art / writing / music / etc you are an artist an author a musician
  - you are not an Image Generator For Clicks And Views. please. allow yourself to connect with your work by naming it properly and acknowledging yourself in kind

People talk about dull or menial jobs like they're easy

Ok yes, it's easy to make a coffee or pick a tomato. Now do it 1,000 times. Do it every day. Do it with people yelling at you. Do it in the cold. Do it while you're sick.

Just because the task is easy doesn't mean the job is

Yesterday I took my last PrEP pill.

This morning I visited my medical provider and began Apretude, an injectable form of pre-exposure prophylaxis that I will take just once every two months. Sure, it means two more medical appointments per year, but I no longer have to take a daily pill.

I take #PrEP because I am sexually active. I speak out about taking PrEP because I want to do my part to destroy the stigmas surrounding sexual behaviors. Slut shaming has no place in 2023.

Several years ago, there was this meme running around regarding The Sims (I'm not even sure there were even called memes back then), probably paraphrasing, about how the game lets you realize your wildest dreams, such as owning a house, having a steady job, pursuing all your interests, and so on. At the moment I was like "*chuckles* oh, you Internet, lol". Today at 41 it's not that funny anymore.

I encounter disturbingly often people who tell me I can't be #ActuallyAutistic.

It's incredible, really. They are essentially telling me straight to my face, that either I (not to mention my diagnosticians) am mistaken about my identity and that they, random strangers, know me better, or that I am lying.

The only thing I am *not* doing is fitting their considerably prejudiced ideas of what autistic people are like.

Where on Earth do these people get such endless self-confidence? 1/

The list of my shortcomings as an #Autist is both sad and hilarious. For the longest time, my favorite reason why I can't be autistic was "you don't dress like an autist", but now the situation is a tie with "you can't name even ten train models".

Communication is among my major talents, yet there are these times when words fail me... 🤣

Some very nice liberal people need to learn it's totally okay to hate someone who is literally and objectively evil, that evil isn't just a deplorable word right-wingers invented to attack marginalized people, that actual evil transpires around us all the time, and there's no middle ground, no compromise, and no debate to be had with people who want to commit actual genocide.

"Can you explain this gap in your resume?"

Yes. Life is about more than constant and meaningless toil for 40-50 years and a desolate twilight of failed ambitions. The social contract is broken and the system is a lie. You and I are both trapped in the same Sisyphean hell, where no amount of working harder or longer will ever truly grant the rewards we were promised. The real question is, why are there no gaps in YOUR resume?

So many people freak out that the #fediverse is just creating a bubble with all the banning and blocking. What they don't realize is that algorithms also put you into a serious bubble. Everything is a bubble, it just comes down to WHO decides what bubble you are in. Most of history we have lived in a geographic bubble. The pre-algorithm internet had a hybrid of interest and geography bubble. The publicly traded internet creates a make money bubble, ethics be damned. Anyone who thinks they aren't already in a bubble of some kind is delusional. The Fediverse and #mastodon are a much more mindful and ethical bubble, and seems much closer to the early internet bubbles than the for-profit ones.
@Daniel Brotherston Pretty sure you wouldn't deal with those people in real life, why be forced to deal with them in person. There are social punishments to them in real life, why should online be different?
Exactly!

I think however it's less common in person. These people are part of social groups like churches or other groups which force people to interact with them, despite their inherent repulsion.

Appliances that aren't "smart" is a right-to-repair issue.

One of the biggest reasons why I don't want any appliances to require an app is that it introduces another way to force you into obsolescence and prevent you from repairing your stuff forever.

I'd always rather have an older repairable thing than a new thing I can't fix.

Today marks twice in two months that companies have given a job to someone else after I got a thumbs up from everyone at every stage of their multi-week interview process.

What if we stopped making interviews an endurance race? I mean, even ignoring the value of my time, this must cost them 4 or 5 thousand dollars per candidate. If companies invested even half this much time in their onboarding, they would just never make a "bad" hire.

jec& reshared this.

@Jenniferplusplus The whole hiring process amounts to little more than corporate astrology and I wonder why everyone keeps falling for it.
@jec I would call it hazing, actually. And hazing is its own purpose.
@jec&

jec& reshared this.

Scare quotes on "bad" hire, because there's almost no such thing. People just do not apply for jobs that they're wholly incapable of doing. Certainly not at the rate that would justify this expense or treatment of people. Especially given how easy that is to identify.

So if companies are finding that people routinely come into their environment and fail, they should really fix the environment, not the people.

And if they somehow do get lots of unqualified candidates, maybe they should stop favoring cishet white dudes?

something i would recommend every developer watch is “simple made easy” by rich hickey (http://www.infoq.com/presentations/Simple-Made-Easy), which makes a very salient distinction between simple (i.e. not complex) and easy (i.e. at hand, already known). just because something’s easy doesn’t mean it’s simple. managing complexity gets time consuming enough to tank companies and products, even if it’s “easy” to plow ahead because of the sunk cost fallacy
