this is a long shot because I'm pretty sure I'm one of only two people who has ever used this group but... @transrights this guy is looking for transmasc friends! anyone?
I find that one of the healthiest and better things that happened to me in recent times, as I become older (41 this next march 2023), was to overcome the dark pull of Kids And Their Phones These Days(TM). It's not all my merit, I must admit - it started happening naturally, simply by being more exposed to younger people online - and then when I noticed that, I told myself "oh right - yes, this is good, I oughta see this through" and I actively set out to finish the job.
I will say it's very surprising, however, how we can lack the perspective to recognize in ourselves that which we despised (rightfully) when it was done to us.

I find myself just now hypothesizing that maybe an issue with allistics feeling uncomfortable and tuning out infodumping is that our unusual eye contact, communicational quirks, etc makes them feel they're been talked *at*, not *to*. Which is unfortunate and untrue, but u know. Watcha gonna do, if they can't process people being different 😔

I think the West's pro-LGBT stance in #Qatar is tinged with racism and paternalism.
I'm #Nigerian and I know that we were historically pro-LGBT - until the British arrived and put anti-gay laws on our statutes. And then American evangelists arrived and told us it was a sin.
The West changed its mind 2 minutes ago and turned to wag its finger at us.
PS: I am pro-LGBTQIA+ but I want to supply some context

Programmers and institutions select the data with which to train the model. They take art and writing from artists and authors without credit or payment. The software then remixes and mimics what it is given.
Displacing agency by attributing intent to the AI is exactly how people and institutions erase human action in the creation of technology. It also leads to further perceptions of technology as acultural, unbiased, and, in essence, magical.

Honestly, a lot more artists do small scale sales in middle-class contexts than do sales to the rich, and in that context, their work is bought for a more utilitarian understanding of decorativeness+meaning, much closer to the illustration case. But what I mean around labor and value-accrual is on the other end. None of these systems work without the training data, and there derivative works that conversation compressed versions of that training data, and yet the value accrues entirely to an intermediary. Artists have the right to set their own rates for derivative works licensing. I'm not usually an IP maximalist, but there's a meaningful distinction between access to culture on an individual basis and the creation of a system intended to evolve to a point where the work of the people from which its creators are stealing is entirely replaced.
Something entirely based on theft from other people cannot be art. An original tuned prompt absolutely can have artistic merit, but the artistic merit and "artness" of the result rests almost entirely on a) the work of the ML engineering team, and b), much more heavily, on the source material. Now, there's of course a long tradition of artists working with general purpose software and having that software considered a tool or at most (e.g. with reactive projection mapping installations and touchdesigner or max) a medium, so we can ignore the first. However the last is and always will be an intrinsic component, massively more important than anything involved in prompt engineering. The prompt engineering has contributed almost none of the art and should receive almost none of the value.
It would be perfectly possible, if any of these companies cared, to create a fair licensing structure and modeling systems that could provide a proportional attribution distribution across the source material derived from each prompt, paid out in accordance with derivative work prices determined by the rights holders. Until they do this, it's nothing but theft.

Hello all, I'm Cheyanne, the new blind lady who just joined last night. I'm also on mastodon world but joined here to connect with more of my fallow blind people. I'm going through a bit of a transition period right now as my best friend and roommate passed away in October and as a result I'm dealing with grief, looking for new friends, and looking for an apartment with lower rent all at once. It's a bit much, but I know I can get through. I find online socializing easier as I have some additional issues which make getting out very fatiguing and uncomfortable. I'm a braille reader, an IPhone and IPad user, and I also use a braille display. Looking forward to meeting not only my fellow blind people but any others on this instance as well.

It's very hard for me to respond to ppl asking me if Mastodon is a good "replacement for Twitter" tho; because ultimately folks really don't understand that Twitter wasn't really designed for them and is in fact an attempt to monetize chatting and news, by transforming it into an influence machine that can be parceled out to primarily corporate/state actors and the periodic weirdo who does a lotta Ted Talks.

That’s one perspective I guess. I am aware that cats are solid hunters and do affect the ecosystem in which they live. I’d argue that many pet cats are kept exclusively indoors unless in a catio, cat carrier, or on a leash. At least in the US, not sure about other places. And many “barn cats” or stray cats don’t make it past their first year of life and have an average lifespan of 2-3 years. I also argue that humans have the most damaging ecological effect.

Labia (and vagina) hate/prejudice is real, and it is destructive. Ever since I was a kid I've heard that labias are 'gross' from peers and the media. When I started to be sexually active I was ashamed. Ashamed that my anatomy 'was gross' and not appealing. I was terrified of my partner rejecting me because of it. Someone should not feel ashamed because they posses a particular body part.
We need to stop normalizing this mentality. Speak out if you see it.
