This is the largest #slimemould I've found. It was several feet across and on the move!
A very large slime mould covering an old tree stump. The slime mould is fresh at the top in the direction it has moved - leaving a thin covering lower down. Its mostly white grading in colour to reddish brown. Another patch of slime mould in on the far right where strings of it have grown along coarse grasses.

I'm going to say this again - my white friends who aren't racists do not mind me talking about racism. If you find yourself disturbed by or uncomfortable with topics on racism, you may want to tell yourself some hard truths. And then, work on your findings. You may be racist.

Really captivated by the concept of "neuroqueer" as explained by Nick Walker in this interview.

Someone shared it recently, but I can't find my bookmark, so I'm sharing it fresh from Walker's website: https://neuroqueer.com/toward-a-neuroqueer-future/

Will follow up with my own semi-formed questions and thoughts. Would welcome yours, as well.

I quite like his comparison to the view on homosexuality in the 70s and the progress up to today. Some of the scientific theories of those days are unthinkable now.
Let's see where this journey takes us.

Many peoples idea of what Autism is comes from movies, where misrepresentations abound.

What are some of the worst portrayals you have seen?

#AskingAutistics #ActuallyAutistic
A graphic titled Autism Iceberg with a caption above the water that reads, “What people think Autism is”, and one below, “What Autism really is”. There are many examples shown for each. Some shown above the water: an illness or disease, a tragedy, aggressive, being emotionless. Below the water: anxiety, depression, deep focus, straightforward direct.

Absolutely and same to #StarWars which is really hilarious considering #Andor is one hell of an advertisement against anti fascism.

So far, it looks like western tech, policy, and journalist folks are beginning to migrate to Mastodon en masse. Not ubiquitous, but enough that a critical mass can be said to be starting to form in each.

But Mastodon users seem largely U.S./European. I've seen very few e.g. non-diaspora Indians make the migration to Mastodon; the only one that comes to mind is @internetfreedom. Not aware of any Indian reporters/etc who've migrated.

How do we make Mastodon more accessible for the global South?

What's it with people reporting every single person they dont like.. :amaze:

Please, stop with that.

This is not #Twitter. Please use features like mute or block if you don't like people but stop reporting otherwise I'll start banning people who keep reporting for nothing :blobhammer:

I'm trying to keep things running with so many new people and it's such a waste of time to hear whatever you don't like

Otherwise go waste Elon's time, not mine

When institutions and NT health authorities speak about "higher" or "lower" functioning autists, what they actually mean suitability for being employed subjugated as another cog in the machine, to produce surplus for the capitalists in power. It's not because of any concern for elevating more vulnerable people, and doesn't really say anything about them that actually matters.

For any NTs wondering how autistic people hear stuff when their characteristics include a heightened experience of the sense of hearing: think of one of those AMSR (is that the spelling?) videos. In my case a lower-volume version of those, but I can imagine other people hearing stuff louder.

I have the weirdest time when I look at those "this is what is like to be autistic" things. I mean, I don't see a difference? Maybe because I've never been allistic and can't compare? I would love to see a video about what it's like to be allistic, from a ND perspective.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

Oh AMSR is not really about demoing sensory differences. People seem to regard those as soothing/help sleep "sounds of the sea" type-stuff. tbh I personally think it's just a fetish but... I'll probably get in trouble for saying that out loud.

I don't like being referred to as a "person with autism". I can't just set it down, it's not something I can remove. It is fundamental to the way I interact with the world, right down to how stim enters my brain. If my brain has types of inputs no allistic person can even approach, and methods of processing inherently different, it is an existence no allistic person can reach. There is no version of me that is not autistic.

A "cure" is the same as shooting me and replacing me with someone else.

The type of person I am is autistic. I am autistic.

Tbh this is a really eye-opening perspective. I’ve been taught that it’s best to say “person with autism” to focus on the person and not the disorder itself because people aren’t their disorders. However in your case, it’s a big part of who you are and your experiences thus it’s inappropriate to separate them. I’ll do my best to be flexible since I just want to respect people’s preferences.

Autism is not a disorder. It is a neurotype and a minority position. Different (eg. autistic) does not mean wrong or broken -assuming so is biased thinking.

Medicalized paradigm (that never worked well in understanding autistic experience and has caused way more harm than good) may call it disorder, but in reality that is just a slur.

Most autists support neurodiversity paradigm (and most of those who don't have not yet learned about it).

Thanks for sharing with me - another person shared that with me as well in the thread previously, so I changed my vocabulary to neurotype when they first told me about it.

Ever since then, I’ve been learning more about it. I’m not the most knowledgeable.

I kept the toot online just cuz I don’t want to hide my mistakes - I want to grow from them.

Your attitude is commendable! 🌺 Nobody can know everything, and at this time, there is still a lot of bad info available out there.

You will find best information about autism & neurodivergence directly from autistic and neurodivergend people. Here on Mastodon, the #ActuallyAutistic hashtag is your friend.

I wish you happy exploration!

I strongly believe that neurotypic brains are sort of rate limited and that, as an example, Asperger "OVER 9000" brain memory capacities should be NORMAL BRAIN FUNCTION.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I mean, neurotypical people are a bit weird.

They seem to have a hard time separating facts from emotions. And they don't seem very empathic in general.

But they nonetheless have the capacity to lead a meaningful life.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I know! 😶 😜 I have also noticed that many of them have great difficulty to enjoy their own company. If left alone for a little while, they may even get anxious.

Also, their vague, not very truthful and information-poor communication style seems to constantly lead them into needless drama & other difficulties in social interactions.

I just wish we could ease their suffering and help them somehow to be more like us! 🥺

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

On the other hand, imagine that you were addicted to being in the same room with other people all the time.

I think vague communication often acts as some kind of "social lubricant" that prevents them from choking each other.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

That sounds like a good hypothesis! Maybe we could apply funding from someone who could profit from pathologizing neurotypicality and test it in some pseudoscientific setting? I'm sure our peers would find such research very enlightening!

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

that last line cracked me up 🤣

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

"I've been taught" - that is where the problem starts.

And as @ReimanSaara already said: Autism is not a disorder, its a different neurotype, hence neurodiversity.

I am not disabled, but thoughts like this are disabling me ;)

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

And that is why such thoughts are called biased thinking and discriminating attitudes against minority people.

To be in minority position means that you are in some ways disADVANTAGED compared to general population. It does not necessarily mean, that one is disABLED.

In case of autism, at this time we are so heavily traumatized and oppressed that nobody can really tell whether or not autism itself would be a disability.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

And just to be clear: I don't mean to say that there is anything wrong with being disabled.

But calling result of discrimination as an individual's quality (eg. disability) is actually *internalizing discrimination* and mudding the line between individuals' traits and eg. minority stress/trauma response

Recognizing bias for what it is reminds us of the fact that what needs fixing is society, not people in minorities.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I think it depends on what you’re talking about. With autism/adhd, you are autistic/adhd bc it shapes how you have always interacted with the world. Other issues that you develop are “you have…”

For myself, I say I’m adhd, but I have bipolar.

ActuallyAutistic group reshared this.

I have a strong suspicion that I wouldn't like a version of me that wasn't #Autistic- where what parts of me I DO find toxic would be amplified by neurotypical privilege and I wouldn't have the Autistic drive that I channel into AVOIDING being toxic.

Strong disagree. People like Donald Trump deserve to have EVERYTHING about them made fun of.
Then you really missed the point. The world does not revolve around Trump, and other people deserve dignity and respect, and not have their circumstances and characteristics weaponized as insults and bad things to be.

Reminder: You don't need a diagnosis to consider yourself trans. It is an identity. I don't care what Bureaucracy and cis people have to say.

You also don't need to transition to consider yourself trans. You don't need to take hormones to be trans. You don't need to dress differently to be trans. You are trans if the word resonates with you and you want others to see that part of you.

For trans awareness week I want you to be aware that you are the only one who gets an opinion on that about yourself.
