Twitter really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement
The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.
For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"โlet's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).
"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.
There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.
It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.
Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

Itโs interesting that the biggest communication challenge facing Mastodon communities is explaining that itโs basically a protocol and a network of independent, interconnected servers, which is what the Web, e-mail, even DNS and most of the fundamental services we use on the internet are, and always were.
It just illustrates just how much โBig Techโ proprietary social media platforms swallowed up and walled off, if itโs now difficult to explain what the internet actually is!

I have been asked to CW my posts about spiders. That's fine, I'll go along with that.
Minorities are people, not spiders. Asking them to CW their lived experience, making it like some form of arachnophobia to read it, is offensive.
I will defend the right of people to avoid being exposed to spiders, but not their right to avoid learning about the oppression of others.

got a VERY big PlayStation 1 in the mail today, the original board for the first versions of Beatmania IIDX!
it plays videos by controlling a full-ass external Hi-Fi DVD player over a proprietary serial link, muxes that output back into the video signal, loads the game through a SCSI CD drive and gets its sounds from an IDE hard drive... somehow it all still seems to work after almost 25 years!

Just as my experience of the material world is impacted by considerations of class, gender, race and more, so is my digital experience. Twitter has never been safe for minoritised people and, as a woman of colour, my experience of the platform has always been vitiated by an overarching sense of violence.

The current digital white flight โ or at least its threats โ kicked off by Muskโs tragicomic saga of the acquisition and ongoing torching of Twitter is very familiar, not only in its motivations but its dynamics. Like real-world white flight, it is motivated not by existential or substantial fears, but a perceived threat to comforts of structural privilege. Most importantly, it is premised on a single privileged assumption: that there are, somewhere, safe and comfortable spaces of existence.
I am still, as I am sure most of you are, still on Twitter alongside mastodon, and there are conversations going on there abou *who* is migrating to Mastodon and who isnโt - particularly in GRa ounces of race. Oh! I get it now. It's actually the opposite for us. We call the drier ones sapos ("frogs") and wet ones ranas (it seems you don't have a translation for that word in english). But when looking it up it seems these are all nonscientific terms (by "all" I mean frogs and toads, but sapos and ranas as well) and the actual taxonomy is much more complex and does not reflect popular usage. Kinda like when people call fruits vegetables, or berries things that aren't, etc etc

How is this person allowed to be in charge of anything? Isn't he aware he is not longer in highschool? And this is the person thousands of fanboys idolize?
I'm not one to use language lightly (non-native speaker) so trust me when I say I'm truly amazed. wtf is going on. Struggling to put my amazement into words, really.
And of course he's also a fucking coward, or trapped in impulse/regret cycles, or whatever, so the tweet is already deleted, but there's still articles showing up in search engines referring to the incident.
